He also wrote The Great American, a novel based on the life of U.S. Marine veteran William Morgan, who became a leader of the Castro revolution.
Alex's non-fiction book Soldiers of Reason: The Rand Corporation and the Rise of the American Empire, was long listed for a National Book Award. Alex has written for Time, the Los Angeles Times and others.
Born in Cuba, Alex and his family came to the United States when he was ten. He grew up in New York City, graduated from Columbia University, and won a TV news writing Emmy at KTVU in San Francisco. He has also been a foreign correspondent in Latin America. He and his wife live near Los Angeles.
